In Ecuador hat Texaco vorsätzlich millionen Liter giftiger Abfälle aus der Ölförderung in Teiche und Flüsse eingeleitet anstatt diese wie sonst üblich wieder in den Untergrund zurückzuführen. Das hat Erdreich und Grundwasser dauerhaft vergiftet, sodaß die meisten der dort ansässigen Bewohner an Krebs und anderen ernsthaften Erkrankungen erkrankt sind. Eine weitere Erschließung ist geplant.

Am Rio Xingu in Brasilien ist von Belo Monte ein neuer Mega-Damm geplant, um energieintensive Industrien dorthin auslagern zu können. Dafür müssen rund 20000 Ureinwohner vertrieben werden. Der Methanausstoß durch die überfluteten Flächen wird aber mehr Treibhausgase erzeugen als ganz Sao Paulo.
